I'm Glenn Ferguson, a Licensed Bahamas Marriage Officer and WPIC-certified wedding planner. This guide is what I tell couples who reach out to me curious about marrying in The Bahamas but unsure where to start. By the end, you should know whether The Bahamas is the right choice for your wedding, which island fits your style, what the legal process looks like, and roughly what it will cost.
Everything below reflects how the wedding industry actually works in The Bahamas in 2026: government processes, RGD office hours, package pricing, and the realistic timelines I see couples plan to. No fluff. If you want the action-oriented short version, scroll to How to Start.
Why The Bahamas
Why couples choose The Bahamas for their wedding
The Bahamas has been a destination wedding favorite for decades. The reasons remain consistent: ease of access, legal simplicity, island variety, and the genuine quality of the beaches and resorts. Here is what most couples weigh:
Easy access
Short flights from major US, Canadian, and European cities. Nassau has direct flights from over 20 US cities alone. Most North American couples fly in within 3 hours.
Legal simplicity
Clear, predictable marriage law. 24-hour residency requirement, $100 license fee, both partners present in person, license valid for 3 months. No blood test, no medical, no exam.
Island variety
Eight major islands with different personalities: Nassau resort hub, Paradise Island luxury, Eleuthera and Harbour Island pink sand, Exuma cinematic water, Grand Bahama, Andros, Abaco for quieter Out Island feel.
Currency parity
The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Both currencies are accepted everywhere. No exchange rate calculation needed for American couples.
Compared to other Caribbean wedding destinations, The Bahamas wins on speed (priority service can deliver an apostilled certificate in 3 business days), language (English is the official language), and infrastructure (more international flights, more resort options, more accessible vendors). Where it loses: it is not the cheapest option in the region. But the cost difference buys ease and predictability that most couples find worth the spend.
Choose Your Island
All 8 major Bahamian islands, compared
The Bahamas has 700+ islands and cays, of which about 30 are inhabited and 8 are practical wedding destinations. Here is what each one is known for, and the kind of couple who tends to choose it.
Nassau
Best for: easy guest logistics
The capital and most accessible Bahamian island. Home to the Registrar General's Department, where every marriage license is issued. Best for weddings that need direct flight access, multiple flight options, and broad resort choice.
Notable venues: Cable Beach, Baha Mar, Sandals Royal Bahamian, Grand Hyatt, Goldwynn, Nuptial Beach.
Paradise Island
Best for: resort luxury
Connected to Nassau by bridge, home to the highest-tier resorts. Quick airport access plus luxury at the top end. The Ocean Club is the iconic option.
Notable venues: The Ocean Club (Four Seasons), Atlantis Paradise Island, The Cove Atlantis.
Eleuthera
Best for: pink sand beaches, boutique scale
Long, narrow island with dramatic cliffs, pink sand beaches, and a quieter atmosphere than Nassau. Best for couples who want privacy, photogenic terrain, and 30 to 60 guest weddings rather than full resort scale.
Notable venues: The Cove, French Leave, Cape Eleuthera, La Bougainvillea, Sky Beach Club.
Harbour Island
Best for: name-recognition luxury
Three-mile pink sand beach island accessed by ferry from Eleuthera. Known for boutique luxury resorts and a sophisticated guest list. The Potlatch Club has Beatles and Michelin Key history.
Notable venues: Pink Sands Resort, The Potlatch Club, Coral Sands, Dunmore.
Exuma
Best for: cinematic water, private villas
The Exuma chain is what shows up in destination wedding photography most often: turquoise water, white sand, sandbars, swimming pigs. Best for villa-based weddings, sandbar elopements, and 10 to 40 guest celebrations.
Notable venues: Grand Isle Resort, The Exuma Outpost, Baymahni, Embrace Resort, Paradise Bay.
Grand Bahama
Best for: alternative to Nassau, value
The northernmost major island, centered on Freeport. Less developed than Nassau but with its own character, including East End and West End coastlines. Good value option for couples wanting a Bahamas wedding without Nassau's pace.
Notable areas: Freeport, Lucaya, East End, West End.
Andros
Best for: genuine privacy, remote feel
The largest Bahamian island by landmass, the least developed. Famous for bonefishing, blue holes, and the third-largest barrier reef in the world. Best for couples who want a Bahamas wedding without the resort scene at all.
Notable areas: Kamalame Cay, Andros Town, Fresh Creek.
Abaco
Best for: boating, Out Island atmosphere
Sailing and boating culture, with Hope Town's iconic candy-striped lighthouse a popular ceremony backdrop. Recovering and rebuilding since Hurricane Dorian (2019), increasingly popular again. Best for nautical couples.
Notable areas: Hope Town, Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay, Green Turtle Cay.
If you are torn between two or three islands, WhatsApp me your guest count, budget, and what matters most. I'll narrow it to one or two best-fit options.
Cost & Packages
What a Bahamas wedding actually costs in 2026
Pricing depends on three main variables: package level, add-ons (photography, floral, music, reception, transportation), and venue (resort, villa, public beach). Below is the rough range across the three main tiers I work with.
Elopement & Vow Renewal
Just the two of you plus required witnesses. Beach or simple resort ceremony, marriage officer, license assistance.
Mid-Range Wedding
Up to ~25 guests. Floral, photography, music, transportation typically included. Resort or villa setting.
Full Luxury Wedding
Larger guest count, full vendor coordination, premium venues, full set of add-ons. Eternal Love package tops out at $11,995.
The complete package list, with every inclusion detailed, is on the packages page. I work with 9 wedding packages from $1,495 to $11,995 and 3 vow renewal packages from $425 to $1,495. Add-ons are quoted as line items.
One additional cost to know: a 25 percent line item for Government VAT, online transfer costs, and banking fees is added to the subtotal of every invoice. This covers Bahamas VAT and the actual cost of moving money across borders. Resort or cruise ship facility costs are billed separately by those venues. Every cost is disclosed in your written quote before any deposit is paid. See a sample invoice and terms.
Legal Process
The marriage process, in plain English
The Bahamian marriage law is mercifully simple compared to other destination options. Here is the standard pathway, summarized. The full legal guide covers each step in depth with documents, costs, and edge cases.
Arrive in The Bahamas
Both partners must be physically present. The 24-hour residency clock starts at first arrival at any Bahamian port (including private cruise islands like CocoCay, Half Moon Cay, or Castaway Cay if your cruise visits one).
Apply for the marriage license
At the Registrar General's Department in Nassau (Shirley Street). Open Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Closed weekends. Both partners present in person. $100 fee paid in cash. Same-day issuance typical (about 1 hour with priority service).
Marry within 3 months
The license is valid for 3 months from issuance. Ceremony can take place on any Bahamian island. A Licensed Marriage Officer (this is what I am) must perform the ceremony for it to be legally recognized. Two adult witnesses required.
Receive your marriage certificate
I file Form 9 with the Registrar after the ceremony. Certified marriage certificate available within 1 to several weeks standard, or 1 business day with priority service.
Apostille for international recognition
If you need your marriage recognized in your home country (US, UK, Canada, EU, Australia, etc.), an apostille is required. Standard processing 4 to 8 weeks, or 1 to 4 business days with priority service. The Bahamas is a Hague Apostille Convention member.
Priority Service
Married in as little as 3 business days
For couples on tight timelines (urgent travel windows, visa deadlines, work obligations, or just preferring a fast turnaround), I offer a priority service that compresses every step of the standard process.
Priority service is available across all 8 islands. Pre-registration via the marriage license application form enables the fastest pathway. If your timeline is tight, send me a WhatsApp message with your arrival date and I'll tell you honestly whether priority service can deliver for your situation.
Realistic Timelines
How long does Bahamas wedding planning take?
The 24-hour rule sounds simple but trips couples up constantly. Here are four realistic scenarios showing how the timing actually works in practice.
Tight 3-day Nassau elopement
- Monday: Arrive in Nassau. The 24-hour clock starts.
- Tuesday: Apply for the license at the Registrar General's Department in the afternoon. Same-day issuance with priority service.
- Wednesday: Wedding ceremony.
Multi-port cruise wedding (same-day Nassau)
- Day 1 (Mon-Wed): Cruise reaches first Bahamian port, CocoCay, Half Moon Cay, Castaway Cay, Bimini, or Freeport. The 24-hour clock starts here.
- Day 2 (Tue-Fri): Cruise arrives in Nassau. 24+ hours have elapsed. Disembark, apply for license, marry at Nuptial Beach, re-board before departure. RGD weekday only.
Saturday or Sunday wedding (weekend ceremony)
- Thursday: Arrive in The Bahamas by Thursday at the latest. 24-hour clock starts.
- Friday: Apply for the marriage license at the RGD. License must be issued today (RGD closed Sat/Sun).
- Saturday or Sunday: Wedding day.
Full destination wedding with guests
- 9 to 12 months out: Venue booking for peak season dates (December through April). Vendor contracts signed.
- 3 to 6 months out: Guest invitations, travel logistics, photography and floral details finalized.
- 2 weeks out: Final headcount, document verification, ceremony details locked.
- Wedding week: Arrive 2 to 3 days early. License application Tuesday/Wednesday for a Friday/Saturday ceremony.

FAQ
How much does a wedding in The Bahamas cost in 2026?
Wedding packages start at $1,495 (Sweet Beginning, elopement essentials) and go up to $11,995 (Eternal Love, full luxury). Vow renewal packages range from $425 to $1,495. Add-ons (photography, floral, music, DJ, reception, transportation) are quoted as line items. A 25 percent charge for Government VAT and banking fees applies to the subtotal. Every cost is disclosed in your written quote before any deposit is paid. See all 12 packages.
Which Bahamian island is best for a wedding?
It depends on your style. Nassau and Paradise Island for easiest guest logistics. Eleuthera and Harbour Island for pink sand and boutique luxury. Exuma for cinematic water and private villas. Grand Bahama, Andros, and Abaco for quieter Out Island experiences. WhatsApp me your details and I'll match you to the right one.
How long does it take to plan a Bahamas wedding?
Elopements and small ceremonies can be planned in a few weeks, or as little as 3 business days with priority service. Mid-tier resort weddings typically need 3 to 6 months. Top-tier luxury venues like The Ocean Club, Rosewood Baha Mar, Pink Sands Resort, and The Potlatch Club often require 9 to 12 months for peak season dates (December through April plus major holidays).
What are the legal requirements to get married in The Bahamas?
Both partners must be physically present in The Bahamas for at least 24 hours before applying for the marriage license at the Registrar General's Department in Nassau (open Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, closed weekends). Both partners must be 18 or older, present in person, with valid passports plus certified divorce decrees or death certificates if previously married. The $100 application fee is paid at the RGD. The license is valid for 3 months. No blood test required.
Can I get married in The Bahamas during a cruise stopover?
Yes, with two pathways. Multi-port cruise (same-day Nassau wedding): if your cruise visited another Bahamian port (Freeport, Bimini, CocoCay, Half Moon Cay, or Castaway Cay) for 24+ hours before reaching Nassau, the 24-hour rule is already met and you can apply for the license and marry the same day during the Nassau port stop. Single-Nassau-port cruise: if Nassau is your only Bahamian port, arrive 24+ hours before embarkation on a pre-cruise stay. Both pathways require the Nassau application to fall Monday to Friday.
Is same-sex marriage legal in The Bahamas?
The Bahamas does not currently legally recognize same-sex marriage (the Matrimonial Causes Act defines marriage as between a man and a woman). However, I officiate non-legal commitment ceremonies and vow renewals for same-sex couples. The country is welcoming to LGBTQ+ visitors and ceremonies can take place at any major Bahamian wedding venue. WhatsApp me for details.
Will my Bahamas marriage be legally recognized in my home country?
Yes. The Bahamas is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which means your Bahamian marriage certificate, once apostilled, is recognized in all member countries (US, UK, Canada, EU, Australia, and most of the developed world). Apostille processing takes 4 to 8 weeks standard, or 1 to 4 business days with priority service. Non-Hague countries require consular legalization, which I coordinate separately.
What is the fastest way to plan a Bahamas wedding?
Send me a WhatsApp message with your arrival date, wedding date, island preference, guest count, and approximate budget. I reply within 24 hours with a recommendation, a written quote, and the cleanest legal path for your timeline. With priority service, the entire process from arrival to apostilled marriage certificate can be completed in as little as 3 business days.
